AN EDUCATED CONSUMER IS A SMART SHOPPER
Today there are many ways to buy products or services. Keep the following
tips in mind:
Be wary of exaggerated product claims or extremely low prices.
Read product descriptions carefully - sometimes photos can be misleading.
Advertised prices can often be confusing or misleading. Surf
online and capture the lowest price available; go armed with these prices
to negotiate your best price at the store.
Stick with one basic color when choosing kitchen appliances. This way they
can be purchased separately; it also allows you to mix and match brands
and styles.
When comparing appliance brands and styles, be sure to inquire whether all
or some part of the appliance is powder coated.
Not sure if a product's color is right for your décor? Take along your
fabric swatches, paint chips and tiles to the store and see for yourself.
Before you purchase items for your home, consult with professionals, i.e.
interior designer, contractor. They often can provide information on
products that others do not think about. Also look at published sources
such as buyers guides, magazine articles, etc.
Purchase seasonal items, such as lawn furniture, mowers and summer outdoor
sporting equipment, in the fall or winter, when there are often deep
discounts.
Before making your purchase, inquire about warranty options and ask
questions regarding the store's exchange/refund policies.

Get all understandings in writing - oral promises do not hold up.
Carefully read your contract or sales order to make sure that it details
clearly and exactly the product or service you wish to purchase.
Don't be pressured. Use careful judgment in all purchases. Don't buy until
you are satisfied with answers to all your questions.
Before you make a significant purchase, think about what you really need
and what features are important to you. Comparison-shop between different
brands and different retailers. For major purchases, look for expert
product comparison reports.
Check with your local consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau
to find out the reputation and complaint record of prospective suppliers
of goods and services.
If you purchase something over the telephone or online, be perfectly clear
about what you are ordering and how much it costs before you give your
credit card number. Never give your credit card, bank account or social
security number over the telephone or online as proof of your identity
unless you placed the call or initiated the contact or have an account
with the company.
Keep a complete record of your order, including the company's name,
address, telephone number, price of the items ordered, handling charges,
miscellaneous charges, order date and your method of payment.
Don't assume the lowest priced product is always the best value. You often
do "get what you pay for."
Remember that a product's finish can affect its durability and appearance
and thus its value. For more information on powder coating and the types
of products with a powder coated finish, visit the consumer section at www.powdercoating.org.
